Ment4 provides one-to-one specialist mentoring for 11 to 18 year olds with emotional and behavioural difficulties based in and around Croydon (we support neighbouring boroughs also). We help those vulnerable to crime, non-attending or excluded from schools, those judged as particularly vulnerable by Children's Social Care, and direct referrals from families.

The Merton Young Person's Risk and Resilience service is an integrated service focused on mitigating risks and promoting resilience in young people. Our aim is to ensure young people don't move from worker to worker and receive holistic, seamless intervention for all their presenting needs. Their designated caseworker will assess their individual needs before developing a support plan. Young people are then supported according to their individual needs, such as through one-to-one work, drop-in sessions and awareness-raising training.

Our team includes specialists who are professionals at providing substance misuse services for young people (e.g., psychosocial support and access to pharmacological support, if required).

We also support young people who are currently involved in child sexual exploitation (CSE) or child criminal exploitation (CCE). We do screenings and assessments and provide suitable interventions which enable young people to reflect upon and recognise the exploitation. This service works in partnership with police and Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs), attending multi-agency child sexual exploitation (MACE) meetings, and promoting the sharing of intelligence across agencies.

Our missing from home or care services identify reasons for young people running away and provide support.

City Hall has partnered with Laureus Sport for Good and Nike to deliver an innovative initiative called ‘Model City’. Model City is a key project of the Mayor’s Sport Unites programme.

Model City empowers communities to create change in their local area through harnessing the power of sport. The initiative is underway as a place-based pilot in three London Boroughs: Haringey, Barking and Hounslow.

Each Model City comprises of community members who form a ‘coalition’. The coalition works together to identify local challenges and selects sports initiatives to fund in order to address them.

Real change starts local

Model City is a powerful example of the ‘bottom up’ approach that Sport Unites champions – actively encouraging local communities to influence the decisions that impact them. Funding is ultimately directed towards the issues that coalitions recognise as being important to their area and its residents.

Empowering locals to lead the decision-making process builds trust – creating a framework for partnerships to develop and communities to thrive. A combination of data, desk-based research and local consultation were used to determine the Model City locations in London.

Model City is a partnership between City Hall, Laureus Sport for Good and Nike. Laureus Sport for Good is a global charity that uses the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage for young people. Model City has been used to create positive change through sport in New Orleans and Atlanta.

More Than Mentors provides mentoring support for young people aged 11-16, from mentors aged 11-20 who live in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, or the London Borough of Haringey.

Our More Than Mentors programmes takes an Early Action approach aimed at preventing future mental health need for young people through an innovative model of peer mentoring.

By supporting students who present early, we aspire to address early markers for mental health needs such as depression, stress and anxieties, and reduce associated symptoms. Through peer mentoring we are looking to build young people's emotional resilience and self-confidence, improve their attendance and attainment at school and offer a preventative approach to mental health and emotional distress within the borough.

Mosaic Clubhouse supports people who are living with a mental health condition in the London Borough of Lambeth. Mosaic's approach is built on the internationally-recognised Clubhouse model, which embeds co-production between staff and members throughout all activities.

The Clubhouse offers its members and visitors a wide range of opportunities, access to education and employment, crisis support and information and signposting to other local organisations.

Mothers Against Muggings was co-founded  after too many of their sons' teenage friends had fallen victim to muggings in their local community.

This prompted us to connect with their police team and community leaders to develop a programme to tackle their local youth mugging issue and for it to be developed and rolled-out nationally.

The more we got involved in their local youth mugging situation, the more they saw their community was not alone. This is not just an issue for Richmond-upon-Thames or London - it is a national and global issue.  

All teens need personal safety and awareness advice. We, as a society, have forgotten the importance of educating our children about personal physical safety, yet loaded them up with valuable tech – worth mugging for.

Barbara and Felicity have developed a programme that offers simple, effective advice that is easy to follow and has been proven to work.  The programme was created with the input from the Metropolitan Police, council leaders, youth workers, school headteachers, parents and victims of muggings.

At some point in each of our lives we are all reliant on being presented with an opportunity… Movement to Work operates in a world of opportunity and seeks to break the vicious ‘no job – no experience’ cycle that is preventing young people, not currently in education, employment or training, from stepping onto the career ladder. By supporting organisations in providing quality vocational employment and work placement opportunities, Movement to Work helps to drive both business performance and bring about lasting social change.

We work with employers to find the best solution for their organisation; either in-house with delivery through their own resource or through a training provider to support them in delivering their programme(s).

Our workshops and outreach programs are reactive, and explore growing issues such as mental health, self-esteem, and safeguarding, to name a few. We help connect young people to local and national services to maximise their opportunities, encourage responsibility and development of respected citizens, and foster community relationships. Operation Black Vote is non-partisan and not-for-profit national organisation that was established in 1996 to address the Black British and ethnic minority democratic deficit. We act as a conduit to support vulnerable homeless, ex-offenders and veterans to overcome hurdles by finding jobs within the hospitality, pub and restaurant industry. We are not a recruitment agency and solely focus on helping those on the project to find work. Outside of the moral benefits, the project is underpinned by a strong commercial and financial benefit to the hospitality, pub & restaurant industry whilst reducing the ever increasing strain on funding required for those who find themselves in such extreme circumstances. Homeless charity, Crisis, have worked with us from the very beginning to ensure that the standards required to help someone return to work are adhered to and are in no way compromised. For those who are on the project but are not / nor are in danger of being homeless or sleeping rough then the same high standards apply. The funds raised by ONLY A PAVEMENT AWAY will be used to support those returning to work, supplement the resources required by the charities/associations to manage the project and promote the jobs available. The ethos of the project is based on a very simple concept, that no matter who or where you are, you are ONLY A PAVEMENT AWAY.

Only Connect is a crime prevention charity, established in 2006 by Danny and Emma Kruger. Since then Only Connect has evolved into one of the most highly regarded and effective crime prevention Charities in London, with a track record of halving the re-offending rate (New Philanthropy Capital, Unlocking Value).

We have over eleven years experience of working with young people who have been involved in the criminal justice system. We have delivered projects at all stages in the offending cycle: from delivering preventative work in schools across the capital, to working in London prisons for over a decade, to our community model that works in partnership with youth offending teams and probation services throughout the capital to minimise reoffending. Since 2006, our work has reached tens of thousands of Londoners, helping them to move away from crime.

Youth Zones are a place where young people can engage with youth workers on their own terms – away from the pressures of school and family.  Through one-to-one sessions and targeted programmes  – such as employability and mentoring schemes – youth workers help young people to look after their mental health, develop the skills they need for the future – from communications to sexual health – and much more.

Our youth workers at all Youth Zones across the UK are continuing to support young people every day.

Working closely with their local authorities, partners and other stakeholders we are determined to meet the needs of young people as best we can at this difficult time, as well as support the wider community.

As well as maintaining a digital offer, Youth Zones are also visiting local parks and communities setting up games and activities for them to join in outdoors.

Like they did through lockdown, youth workers are reaching out by phone to give support to those we know will need us most and for any young people who want to speak one to one, supporting good emotional health and wellbeing and safeguarding vulnerable young people. Small Zoom groups are enabling us to replicate some of the high quality discussion sessions that great youth work is built on.

The OYA approach to learning and personal development is HOLISTIC.

Our activities range from formal National Curriculum lessons to vocational training, drama, dance & drumming, football, fashion and public speaking.
In many ways, the young people who participate in OYA activities in 2020 have not changed much in the 20 years since we started. They:

*are all pre-teenagers or teens, ages ranging from 10 to 19.
*come from all over Africa – east, west, south - and the Caribbean
*live all over London, but mostly in Barnet, Harrow and Brent.
*attend 40 different primary and secondary schools.

Osmani Trust is a youth and community organisation based in Tower Hamlets. The Trust offers a wide range of community, health and sporting initiatives tailored to the needs of the community. It aims to provide a holistic service, which helps people, particularly those living in disadvantaged urban communities to re-engage with mainstream society and improve their quality of life. Through its provisions, Osmani Trust seeks to address issues impacting the community including substance misuse, racial tensions, criminality and anti-social behaviour, territoriality and gang-related violence, unemployment and overcrowding, lack of training and employment opportunities. It also places strong emphasis on the health and social welfare of the community.

Our Pain 2 Power is a grass-root youth organisation providing wrap-around support for at-risk youth from underserved communities.

We define at-risk youth as youth with greater vulnerability to a life of crime, violence, substance abuse, school failure, mental health disorders, and social, emotional, and behavioural challenges.

We support our young people through personalised learning, tailored preventative mentorship and creative workshops to equip them with the skills and knowledge to maximise positive outcomes.

Our mission is to empower under-represented youth, encourage positive behaviour, and give them a chance to prove their credibility and access creative opportunities they would otherwise be locked out of. Oxygen also manages delivery of Kingston Street Pastors whose mission is to care, listen and help people in Kingston's night time economy (this includes regular engagement with the homeless).

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. We believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide.

PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress.

We work with 1,000s of amazing residents in Barking and Dagenham to build networks of friendship through the ‘every one every day’ initiative.

Together we aim to co-create the first large scale, fully inclusive, practical participatory ecosystem.

Traditional mental health services meet the needs of some people but are often not flexible enough to meet the specific and complex needs of those who are marginalised, stigmatised and excluded.

For good reason these communities often have difficult relationships with help and negative experiences with our current systems; where whiteness prevails, the evidence base for interventions is Eurocentric, mental health trainings are underpinned by theories that are rooted in slavery and colonialism, and racial trauma is pathologized.

These services may have long waiting lists, be in areas where people feel unsafe, staffed by professionals with limited understanding of their cultural contexts and worlds, have rigid appointment times, and are bureaucratic.

Marginalised, stigmatised and excluded communities are often left feeling judged, uncomfortable, unsure who they can trust, and further harm is caused as a result of our existing systems and services that are often trauma-inducting, rather than trauma-informed. As a result people often don't engage and services lose resources. Communities have long felt the effects of these discriminations. What we do is different.

I provide drug awareness talks in the London borough & Havering, as it's where I was brought up & committed a lot of crime, so I wanted to put something back into this community. My drug awareness talks do require a small fee as I'm not a charity neither am I funded.

I travel all over the UK visiting 100s of primary/secondary schools, youth centres, young offenders and many professional football clubs on their 'football in the community' projects, speaking with around 50,000 kids every year.

The age range of the kids I speak to about drug awareness starts from 7 through to young adults and I do tailor my drug awareness workshops for the younger ones, giving them a watered down version of my life. Each drug awareness workshop lasts around 45 min allowing 15 min for Q & A but most of my feed back come through twitter & Instagram (@paulhannaford).

Since 2009 I've spoken to well over 300,000 young people giving them a real life insight into drug addition, alcohol, gang life, gun & knife crime, prison life, self harm & bullying.

Penificent is a social enterprise that creates comic books and workshops that tackle difficult topics and social issues and has gained national attention and media coverage since its launch in 2017.

We want to connect with young people and allow them to realise their full potential in a fresh way. Using a diverse set of characters, our comic books explore a range of difficult topics such as mental health, knife crime, gang culture and much more. Comic books are a fantastic medium for education and for facilitating conversations, as the stories are able to creatively capture the voices of those most affected by such social issues.

Inspiration for our stories come from real-life scenarios that we've experienced growing up in London, but also from broader issues involving wars and famine. Integrating these comics into education, each book contains thought-provoking questions for individuals or classes/groups to discuss. Questions such as "What do you think you should do if someone was to tempt you to do something bad like this character was?" Or "What would you have done in this character's shoes and why?"

Steps to improve the employability of offenders are part of the government’s aim to drive a ‘Rehabilitation Revolution’ to create more purposeful regimes that help reduce reoffending and the Coalition Programme committed to ensuring prisoners engage in “properly paid work”. Some good examples of creative employment in custody already exist, but major obstacles remain in the current system that need to be overcome before HM Prison Service can deliver on the government’s objectives. Research shows that we need to treat violence as a public health issue – as a disease – and not simply a criminal justice issue. Only a holistic approach with a cross fertilisation of specialists from a range of disciplines can tackle the root issues and protect the lives of our children and young people. As a society, we all have a role to play.

Police have a long history of working to prevent vulnerable people being drawn into criminal behaviour. The government-led, multi-agency Prevent programme aims to stop individuals becoming terrorists and police play a key role. We work with local authority partners and community organisations to help find solutions and work to support and protect vulnerable people.

Following assessment, many referrals to Prevent do not result in any further police action. In some cases other organisations such as health, housing or education step in to provide support.

All referrals to police are handled with sensitivity and in confidence. If a person is assessed as being a terrorism risk, they may be referred to Home Office’s Channel Programme and maybe given help from a mentor. UK Policing has a proud history of community engagement, and the success of Counter Terrorism Policing – just like other areas of policing – relies on the trust, confidence and support of all communities.

The Prison Advice and Care Trust (Pact) is a national charity that provides support to prisoners, people with convictions, and their families. We support people to make a fresh start, and minimise the harm that can be caused by imprisonment to people who have committed offences, to families and to communities.

What we do:

• Build stronger families and safer communities.

• Reduce risk of harm to prisoners and their children.

• Remove barriers and increase awareness in public services.

• Influence commissioning, policy and legislation.

Prison radio offers a unique, innovative and effective way to communicate with prisoners and engage them in education, debate and community. Working alongside serving prisoners and focusing on speech radio, the PRA produces and delivers National Prison Radio, broadcasting information and educational materials which support the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) reducing reoffending agenda.

Through our varied programming, we provide additional practical and emotional support for groups with specific needs. We've run series of programmes highlighting specific support available for ex-service personnel, care leavers, women in prison, young people behind bars, the disproportionate number of Gypsy and Traveller people behind bars, as well as programming addressing age, ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality and LGBTQ+ issues.

Project Future is a community based holistic and youth-led, mental health and wellbeing service situated in Haringey. It seeks to transform the delivery of mental health for young men aged 11-25 years old who are involved in offending, have experiences of the criminal justice system, and specifically for those exposed to serious youth violence or labelled ‘gang-affiliated’.

Funded by the Big Lottery, the project is a partnership between Mind in Haringey, Barnet, Enfield and Haringey NHS Mental Health Trust, and Haringey Council and has been co-produced by the young people themselves: young men who are entrenched in cycles of poverty and offending, and who are not able to access regular services.

It is primarily a wellbeing service in which evidence-based psychological interventions are delivered to young people in accessible ways. The project is accessed by peer referral only, helping create an environment where young people feel comfortable and safe. At Project Future young people are appointed as experts in their own lives and in the community. They are consulted at every level of the project and are responsible for co-producing a service that best meets the needs of themselves and their peers.

The project is facilitated by a team of clinical psychologists, specialist youth workers and local young people, ‘community consultants’. Together they provide a supportive and nurturing environment for young people to thrive in by addressing their mental health, wellbeing and occupational needs. The service provides bespoke interventions that are tailored to the individual needs of young people, to ultimately improve wellbeing, facilitate rehabilitation and reduce the risk of future offending.

Project GRAE is a transformative initiative rooted in its acronym: Grow, Rise, Aspire, Empower. We are a visionary initiative with a steadfast commitment to empowerment, particularly within marginalised communities. Our mission centres around imparting invaluable knowledge about legal rights, and we achieve this through dynamic and informative sessions and talks. By addressing critical issues, such as increased knife crime, instances of police misconduct, abuse, or excessive use of force (including the potential abuse of stop-and-search powers), we strive to foster a deeper understanding of legal principles and societal challenges that arise when these principles are not upheld.

At Project Lifeline we have been working under the radar as a family run unit serving our communities for many years. Our organisation was established to address the growing need for gang related crime prevention especially concerning vulnerable young people in South London.

At Project Lifeline, our mission is to prevent crime and improve the lives of those in need, by providing essential crime prevention services and support to our community. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to turn their lives around. We work effortlessly with young gang affiliated people, male and female. Our methods of communication have proven to be successful

Project ReMAKE is a simple entrepreneurship training programme for formerly incarcerated people. The 12 week programme teaches basic business skills to aspiring ex-offenders, helping them to build, launch and sustain self-employed businesses.

Our UK programme is following much of the same style and features of the US Stanford Programme, but is independent of it. We work alongside universities to convey their ethos of support, learning, camaraderie, and motivation. None of our participants in 2018 and 2019 have attended a university; this course allows them to become part of the university community and be mentored by students and a faculty.

Project ReMake is rapidly expanding to offer courses and mentoring in partnership with two organisations, Capital City College and Visionnaires.

Project Zero main aim is to see a year when there has been ZERO deaths of a young person through knife or violent crime:

• Engage Young People in Positive Activities to promote social inclusion and reduce anti-social / offending behaviour.

• Raise the aspirations of young people in reaching their full potential and grow into well adjusted adults.

We have been advocates for our children and teens with school, the police, and other authorities.  We meet with parents and their peers to help mediate conflicts, and accompany them to meetings or important appointments to provide support. Race on the Agenda (ROTA) is one of Britain's leading social policy think tanks focusing on issues that affect Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. Originally set up in 1984, ROTA aims to increase the capacity of BAME organisations and strengthen the voice of BAME communities through increased civic engagement and participation in society.

A well known organisation that stands alongside women who have been subjected to sexual violence.

This organisation runs a youth club in West Norwood and operates on many levels in the community. It holds the London Youth Quality Mark. It also highlights the work of other groups.

Raw Material is a creative arts and music centre for young people and adults, working in both the local area in Lambeth, further afield across London, in other regions of the UK and internationally.

The extensive and widely inclusive programme maintains access for those with the greatest needs and our ethos places positive transformation at the forefront of creative pursuits.
We believe that the arts and music, delivered in a socially and culturally relevant way, have the power to change and shape people's lives. The knowledge, skills and experience made possible by the performing and visual arts, music, film and in creative experimentation, are essential to young people's and adults' development, including access to professional resources to create and celebrate the outcomes, both in real-time and digitally.

The cultural learning and practice we support take place in the community, in hospitals, in museums, with arts, voluntary and community organisations, schools and colleges and informally in the wider world, creating opportunities for children, young people and adults to express their ideas and form their values. The Reach Foundation seeks to:

Starting in Feltham, the Foundation seeks to have a transformative impact on communities, making them beacons of social mobility and opportunity for young people, and developing evidenced-based best practice for effectively tackling the complex difficulties affecting vulnerable families.

• Provide new models and challenge for the system:  Across the range of its activities, the Foundation seeks to influence policy and practice through its well-documented, codified and stress-tested approach to delivering change.

The Reach Foundation is now running Reach Children's Hub, a new initiative providing cradle-to-career programmes and services to benefit local children, young people and families in Feltham.

ReachOut2All was started  in 2013, hosting events for young people and running youth initiatives ages 13-30 years old. Our youth led services include mentoring, facilitated workshops, enrichment trips, and training programmes. Our mission is to advocate for young people. We continue to work in partnership with young people, youth organizations, schools and others to promote the importance of valuing young people's voices and giving them opportunities to transform their lives.

ReachOut2All Youth Organization is known for supporting young people and helping them realize that their voice matters and that they can be that change they want to see today. Our aim is to continue to invest in our youth-centered ideas, advocate for systems changes that meet young people's needs, as to give young people a voice through their talents.

Among their wide range of project work, The Youth Inclusion and Community Safety Project is a community engagement focused project aimed at Haringey’s young people. The project develops existing and new routes for engaging with alienated and at-risk youths providing them with first-hand accounts of self-improvement. The project deters and diverts young people from anti-social behaviour and youth violence and motivates them towards personal development and community inclusion.  

£10,140 was recently awarded to deliver a community safety project predominantly aimed at Haringey’s young Somali community, including mentoring, workshops, awareness raising and a one-day summit reaching 300 people overall, in order to reduce knife crime in Wood Green and surrounding areas.

Redbridge CVS is the local umbrella body for charities and community groups. Our office is presently closed and our staff are working from home to support local groups and provide information. Our office will remain closed until at least the end of July. We are keeping the situation under review as the lockdown eases, and are thinking through how we can reduce the risk of infection when the office does re-open.
